MEA is based in Kasungu. Situated at the base of Kasungu Hill in the centre of Malawi, Kasungu is a busy trading town around 80 miles north of the capital, Lilongwe.

The population is estimated at around 100,000 but is growing rapidly.  The town grew up around the tobacco farming industry, and almost 90% of the town’s population earns its living from farming.  Most inhabitants will be below the poverty line and basic utilities such as water and electricity can be very erratic

The market is the heart and soul of the town, with the many smallholder farmers from the local area coming to sell their produce. A lively parade of shops leads down to the market place and three of MEA’s small business investments have branches in this parade.
